Afternoon Speakers

Reporting

Following Wednesday afternoon’s presentations, a discussion was held with the speakers, Professor Andreas Büchler und Valdo Pezzoli, MD, as well as Prof. Dr. Verena Briner, MD.

At the outset, the discussion focused on the question of arbitrariness in decisions about premature births because of the lack of clear boundaries for the decision-making process.

“Quite often, one does not know at all what consequences the interventions on the child will cause because we do not have any experience with the individual,” said Andrea Büchler.

Valdo Pezzoli stressed that the parents’ involvement with sensitive issues concerning premature births is much more intense than 20 years ago: “Back then, parents were not consulted for decisions.”

Later, the problem of ‘tourist trips’ to foreign pre-implantation clinics was discussed. Andrea Büchler feared that only wealthy couples can afford such a trip abroad: “Consequently, artificial reproduction becomes a privilege for the rich.”
