Reporting

Representatives of the Studienstiftung once again take up the propositions that they introduced on the opening day and present their findings. Proposition 1: Global water security calls for cooperative and not conflictive solutions. This proposition has been confirmed. Water supply is a global challenge that calls for regional solutions. / Proposition 2: Aquaethic as a philosophy of water management. Can water be property? An ethical concept is necessary to solve disputes; this is also true for technological and marketing issues. / Proposition 3: Market will solve all problems regarding: Allocation and efficiency: true / Basic needs: not true / Water quality (drinking water): not true. Free wells for basic needs, but additional demand should cover the costs. / Water quantity (farming): true. But prices should be lower than for drinking water. / Proposition 4: Technological re-dimensioning increases sustainability of water management: true, but local socio-economic obstacles have to be overcome. / Trend towards interventions that can be carried out on a regional level. Education and information in order to raise awareness of use, technological possibilities and limits. While in the West, disposal and innovation in farming and technology are priorities; in developing and emerging countries, provision and improvement of infrastructure and sustainable technologies are essential.
