Prof. Gerd Folkers, Collegium Helveticum, Zurich, addresses the contradictory characteristics of water. Water exists in three states of matter: liquid, solid and gaseous. Hot water freezes faster than cold water. Deep sea water does not freeze. Lake temperatures are less extreme than land temperatures and they have moderating effects on the land’s climate. Water erodes landmass. Water means cult and culture. Water is economically meaningful. Its amazing features constantly pose questions to science and its interaction with mankind. Prof. Folkers gives the conference participants the following issue to think about: the contradictoriness of water’s features and its consequences for human contact with this element.
