Dr. Ulrich Claessen, Head of Research & Development of maxon motor ag, introduced the participants to the world of micro drives.

Invented some 180 years ago, these electric motors are increasingly penetrating the realm of superlatives. “The great strength of electric motors is their high degree of efficiency,“ explained Ulrich Claessen. “A standard drive by maxon motor with a diameter of 20 millimeters is capable of up to 30,000 revolutions per minute.”

The demand for miniature engines is expected to rise in the coming years. “The driving force behind the miniaturization of engines is the population’s development,” Ulrich Claessen explained. Because people are getting older, they need appropriate support. Consequently, robots are becoming increasingly important for elderly care.

Ulrich Claessen

Ulrich Claessen, who was born in Bremerhaven, Germany, in 1956, studied physics at the University of Tübingen and at the Technical University Munich. He received his doctorate at the Technical University Munich in 1986.

After four years of working at Siemens in Munich and ten years in the Engineering Division of ABB Traffic Systems/Adtranz, Switzerland, he started building the micro-technology center of CSEM, Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology, in Alpnach, Canton of Obwalden, in 2001.

In 2007, Ulrich Claessen joined maxon motor AG in Sachseln, Canton of Obwalden, where he is responsible for Research and Development as a member of executive management.

Dr. Rer. Nat. Ulrich Claessen is a member of the Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences, Chairman of the Board of Micro Center Central Switzerland AG, member of the Board of Technopark Lucerne, and member of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of the Swiss Economy through Scientific Research.

Donators and Partners

The ETH Board is responsible for the strategic leadership of the ETH domain and assumes the supervision of its institutions. Its close relationship with the ETH Council has contributed to the successful continuation of Academia Engelberg Foundation since 2000.

The Foundation promotes research into the connecting human fundamentals of science. Academia Engelberg Foundation and the Foundation for Basic Research in Human Sciences have entered into a cooperation agreement for the period 2011 to 2015.

Helvetia is a quality-oriented comprehensive insurance company with over 150 years of experience. Academia Engelberg Foundation is convinced it will be able to use important synergies from the partnership starting in 2015.

A partnership with the University of Lucerne has existed since summer 2013. Since 2016 we have also a parthership with the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Lucerne. Through these partnerships, synergies are used and joint projects are tested and realized. The University of Lucerne currently consists of three faculties: the faculties for Theology, Culture and Social Sciences, and Law.
